Ibragimov, in critical condition, is moved to intensive care.
SIA CHECHENPRESS, 4 October 2007
Said-Emin Ibragimov has entered his second day in a hospital’s intensive care unit, where his life is maintained by drip-feeds, yesterday. He had been hospitalized immediately after speaking to the PACE in Strasbourg this Tuesday. Although Said-Emin in conscious, he has lost his speech. The doctors first explained that with overstrain and tiredness, but it became clear today that it manifests an organic change. According to the doctors, a hunger-strike longer than 30 days can influence the brain in such a way, and the change may become irreversible.
Today is the 34th day of Mr. Ibragimov’s hunger-strike. It is possible that he will soon be sent away from the hospital, because, under the French law, doctors have no right to terminate his hunger-strike contrary to his demands. The doctors’ duty is to save the patient’s life, but a man on hunger-strike cannot be kept in the hospital’s reception unit for a long time, and there are few beds there. The decision to keep Mr. Ibragimov in hospital or to send him away is expected within hours.
Said-Emin Ibragimov and his daughter Zarema thank all those who phoned or sent letters supporting the human rights activist.
Yesterday, Mr. Schirmer and Mr. Tellier have reported Mr. Ibragimov’s critical state of health at the Council of Europe meeting.
