Foreign Ministry of Chechen Republic of Ichkeria

Statement on the hunger strike of Said-Emin Ibragimov

SIA CHECHENPRESS, 26 September 2007

It is three weeks now that Chechen human rights activist Said-Emin Ibragimov is on hunger strike outside the PACE building in Strasburg, demanding the international organisations to make a legal and political assessment of the human rights abuses in Chechnya.

His demands are quite practicable, provided that the international organizations honestly observe the international law’s norms and principles. However, today’s world is dominated by the right of force and double standards on the human rights. This hampers the international human rights activists in their struggle against violations of rights and liberties in various countries of the world.

Nevertheless, on 1 September Chechen human rights activist Said-Emin Ibragimov started his protest hunger strike, hoping to be heard by the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly. This hunger strike, which is going on for 22 days now, has demonstrated Mr. Ibragimov’s courage, self-denial, and preparedness to sacrifice his life to defend the rights of the Chechen nation.

In connection with that, I express my grave concern with the present state of Said-Emin Ibragimov’s health. I am afraid that the further continuation of the hunger strike may lead to tragic consequences for him. Bearing in mind the fact that we have already lost 250,000 ChRI citizens and many distinguished leaders of our nation during the latest two wars, I call upon Mr. Ibragimov to stop his hunger strike rather than see it to the tragic end.

Appealing to the international organizations which have declared their preparedness to defend the human rights in the world, I call upon them to respond to the demands of the Chechen human rights activist who risks his life to make the principles of freedom and democracy triumph in the world.

Akhmed Zakaev, Foreign Minister of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria
