Russian officials say a soldier has been killed in a clash with rebels in the troubled Chechnya region.
The Interior Ministry said Monday that the soldier was killed the previous day when a patrol was fired on near Shatoi, deep in the mountains of southern Chechnya where rebel bands move relatively freely in the rugged terrain.
Chechen separatist rebels and Russian forces have fought two major wars in the past two decades. Although fighting in Chechnya died down several years ago, small sporadic clashes continue along with rebel bomb attacks on police and soldiers. |
